Germany's Potato Consumption Reaches 12-Year High

Per capita potato consumption in Germany increased to 63.5 kilograms in the 2023/2024 fiscal year, the highest level in 12 years.
Consumption of fresh potatoes rose significantly by 8.4 kilograms to 25.5 kilograms per person, while processed potato products saw a slight decline of 500 grams.
Experts attribute the surge in fresh potato purchases to factors such as smaller packaging sizes in supermarkets and increased direct sales by farmers.
Germany's 2023 potato harvest yielded 11.6 million tons, with an improved yield of 43.8 tons per hectare despite challenging weather conditions.
While 76% of harvested potatoes were used as food, the rest were allocated for industrial purposes, planting, and animal feed, with Germany maintaining a self-sufficiency rate of 153%.
