Global Executions on the Rise, Driven by Middle East and Asia

  • Amnesty International reports a 53% increase in known executions globally in 2022 compared to 2021, reaching the highest number in five years at 883.
  • The rise was driven primarily by significant increases in executions in Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, which carried out 90% of known executions outside of China.
  • While China is believed to execute the most people, data on its use of the death penalty is classified.
  • The United States recorded 18 executions in 2022, while European countries recorded none except for Belarus.
  • Amnesty International says that while more needs to be done, it is optimistic that one day the death penalty will be fully abolished globally.
