Government Approves ₹4,081 Crore Kedarnath Ropeway Project

The 12.9 km ropeway will reduce travel time from 9 hours to 36 minutes, enhancing connectivity and convenience for pilgrims.

  • The Kedarnath ropeway project, approved by the Union Cabinet, will connect Sonprayag to Kedarnath in Uttarakhand over 12.9 kilometers.
  • The project is part of the National Ropeways Development Programme – Parvatmala Pariyojana and will cost ₹4,081.28 crore.
  • Using advanced tri-cable detachable gondola (3S) technology, the ropeway will have a capacity of 1,800 passengers per hour in each direction, accommodating up to 18,000 passengers daily.
  • The ropeway aims to provide year-round, environmentally friendly, and faster connectivity for pilgrims while creating employment opportunities in construction, tourism, and allied industries.
  • Currently, the journey to Kedarnath involves a 16-kilometer uphill trek from Gaurikund, which the ropeway will replace with a 36-minute ride.
