Haiti's Internally Displaced Population Reaches Record 1 Million Due to Gang Violence

UN reports a threefold increase in displacement over the past year, with children making up over half of those affected.

  • The UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that over 1.04 million people in Haiti are now internally displaced, marking an unprecedented level of displacement in the country.
  • Gang violence has been the primary driver of the crisis, with armed groups controlling much of Port-au-Prince and other parts of the nation, exacerbating political instability and humanitarian challenges.
  • Children account for more than half of the displaced population, with many families struggling to access basic services such as food, water, and healthcare.
  • The number of makeshift displacement sites in Port-au-Prince has risen from 73 to 108 in the past year, while 83% of displaced individuals rely on overburdened host communities for shelter.
  • Deportations of approximately 200,000 Haitians from neighboring countries, including the Dominican Republic, have intensified the strain on already overwhelmed resources and social services.
