'HaLow' Wi-Fi Standard Demonstrated with 1.8-Mile Range

Morse Micro's field test shows potential for long-range, low-power wireless connections, despite lower data rates.

  • Morse Micro, a wireless technology company, has demonstrated the use of the 'HaLow' 802.11ah Wi-Fi standard to achieve a wireless signal range of 1.8 miles.
  • The HaLow standard, approved by the Wi-Fi Alliance in 2016, was designed for use in smart homes, industrial centres and smart city environments.
  • Despite the impressive range, the HaLow standard offers lower data rates, between 150 kbps and 78 Mbps, making it less suitable for average home connections.
  • The HaLow standard operates on the 900 MHz spectrum and is engineered to support smart buildings, IoT devices, wearables, and critical infrastructure.
  • Although not intended to replace Wi-Fi 6 or the new Wi-Fi 7, the HaLow standard could complement them in certain scenarios due to its superior ability to penetrate walls and other solid objects.
