Hertha Berlin president Kay Bernstein has died unexpectedly at the age of 43.
Bernstein, a former hardcore Hertha ultra with no prior managerial experience, was elected president in June 2022.
He oversaw the club’s takeover by an American investment group and relegation from the Bundesliga last season.
Bernstein was known for his efforts to represent the views of fans and members over business interests, criticizing the dependence on TV money, campaigning for a salary cap and against excessive agent fees, and advocating for traditional kickoff times.
Hertha Berlin, currently in the second division of the German football league, is scheduled to host Fortuna Düsseldorf at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin on Sunday.
