Hundreds of Chicago Teenagers Riot in Downtown "Teen Takeover," Disrupting Traffic and Assaulting Bystanders

Two teenage boys were shot during the unrest on Saturday night that saw hundreds of local youth smash car windows, jump on surrounding vehicles, and fire guns in the streets.
Fifteen people, including six juveniles, were arrested in connection with the riot that Chicago's Mayor-elect Brandon Johnson dubbed a "mass protest against poverty and segregation."
While condemning the riot, Johnson warned against vilifying youth and claimed "it's not constructive to demonize youth" who have lacked opportunity.
Outgoing Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot also released a statement addressing the "teen takeover" and calling on parents to take responsibility for their children's actions.
The chaos comes as violent crime rates typically rise during warmer months in Chicago, leading city officials to institute a curfew downtown last year that failed to deter this weekend's unrest.
