Swiatek's decisive performance restored her head-to-head advantage against Gauff (9-1), even though Gauff had gained her first career win over Swiatek earlier in Cincinnati in August.
Gauff, despite leading 4-2 in the second set and serving for it at 5-4, made crucial errors including four consecutive double faults which allowed Swiatek to regain control and secure the victory.
Swiatek's win inches her closer towards the WTA Finals Semifinals and opens up the possibility of retaking her world number one ranking from Aryna Sabalenka, depending on the outcome of later matches.
Despite the loss, Gauff still has a qualifiable standing after a strong performance against Ons Jabeur, and both Swiatek and Gauff will play their last group matches on Friday.
