Indian Coast Guard Rescues Six Crew Members After Cargo Vessel Sinks Off Karnataka Coast

  • The cargo vessel MSV Salamath, carrying cement and construction materials, sank on May 14, approximately 60–70 nautical miles southwest of Mangalore, Karnataka.
  • A distress alert was issued by MT Epic Susui at 12:15 PM on May 14, reporting six survivors adrift in a dinghy about 52 nautical miles off the Karnataka coast.
  • ICGS Vikram, on routine patrol, was diverted to the scene and successfully rescued all six crew members from the dinghy.
  • The survivors, identified as Ismail Shareef, Alemun Ahmed Bhai Ghavda, Kakal Suleman Ismail, Akbar Abdul Surani, Kasam Ismail Mepani, and Azmal, were given first aid and transported to New Mangalore Port on May 15.
  • Local authorities have launched an investigation to ascertain the cause of the vessel’s flooding and eventual sinking, which remains unknown as of now.
