Influenza Cases Decline in Saxony, But Death Toll Reaches 114

The ongoing flu season shows signs of easing, though respiratory infections remain widespread and continue to pose significant risks, particularly for vulnerable populations.

  • Saxony has seen a 31% decrease in reported influenza cases in the past week, with 2,841 new infections recorded from March 3 to March 9.
  • Since the beginning of 2025, 114 people in Saxony have died from influenza, with the majority being elderly, though fatalities include an 8-year-old girl in Leipzig.
  • Influenza B accounts for 51% of reported flu cases, with younger schoolchildren and adults experiencing the highest disease burden.
  • Other respiratory infections, including RSV and COVID-19, are also declining, though COVID-19 has caused 210 deaths in Saxony since October 2024.
  • Saxony remains one of the hardest-hit regions in Germany for respiratory infections, with historically low vaccination rates contributing to severe outcomes.
