Instagram Cuts 60 Technical Program Manager Roles Amid Company Reorganization

Instagram has cut 60 technical program manager positions, eliminating a layer of management at the company. The impacted employees have two months to apply for other roles at the company, or their employment will be terminated.
Instagram is undergoing a reorganization of product teams, creating three new focus areas: Creation, Creators and Friend Sharing. This is part of Instagram's focus on supporting creators who drive teen engagement on the platform.
Instagram's focus on teen engagement comes amidst a lawsuit from over 40 states alleging that Meta's services contribute to young users' mental health problems. Meta is also scheduled to testify before the Senate on child safety on January 31.
Despite regulatory pressure, Instagram remains focused on teen engagement and retention. As part of its recent changes regarding teen safety, Meta will start automatically limiting the type of content that teen Instagram and Facebook accounts can see on the social networks.
