Instagram Influencer Arrested for Fatal DUI Crash in Malibu

Summer Wheaton faces multiple charges after a July 4 collision that killed a rideshare driver on Pacific Coast Highway.

Summer Wheaton, a 33-year-old influencer with over 101,000 Instagram followers, surrendered to authorities and was charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI-related offenses.
The crash occurred on July 4, 2024, when Wheaton allegedly drove her Mercedes-Benz across the median on Pacific Coast Highway, colliding head-on with a Cadillac SUV driven by Martin Okeke, who died at the scene.
Okeke's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit in December, alleging that Wheaton was severely intoxicated and that Nobu Malibu and its event organizers failed to prevent her from driving after a party at the restaurant.
The city of Malibu had denied Nobu a permit for the event due to traffic and safety concerns, but the party was held regardless, drawing criticism and legal scrutiny.
Wheaton was released on a $250,000 bond and faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of the manslaughter charge, with additional potential penalties for DUI-related charges.
