International Police Arrest Key Members of Capcom Hackers, Ragnar Locker Ransomware Group

  • An international police force, researching and prosecuting in 11 different countries, successfully arrested and ended the hacker gang, Ragnar Locker, known for breaching high-profile organisations such as Capcom and ADATA, according to the European law enforcement agency, Europol.
  • Ragnar Locker reportedly obtained over 1TB of confidential data during the November 2020 Capcom cyberattack; including names, emails, passport details, financial details, sales reports, and developer documents, potentially exposing the information of nearly 390,000 individuals on the dark web.
  • The extensive global operation occurred over the course of five days (October 16-20), during which the key target of the gang was arrested in Paris and subsequently appeared in front of the Paris Judicial Court, while other suspects were interviewed in Spain and Latvia.
  • Ragnar Locker's ransomware infrastructure was seized across multiple countries including the Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden; the group's website used for leaking stolen data was also taken down.
  • The ransomware group, not limited to Capcom, ran numerous attacks on critical infrastructures worldwide, with recent victims such as the Portuguese national carrier and an Israeli hospital.
