Patrick McCaffery and Payton Sandfort led the Iowa Hawkeyes to a 98-67 victory over Alabama State, scoring 22 and 17 points respectively, with Sandfort also securing 12 rebounds.
The Hawkeyes took control of the game with a 9-0 run in the final 90 seconds of the first half, leading 49-37 at intermission and maintaining a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.
Iowa's efficient teamwork was evident with 27 assists on 33 made field goals, and they capitalized on Alabama State's mistakes, scoring 20 points off 16 turnovers.
Despite a strong performance from Alabama State's Antonio 'TJ' Madlock, who scored 23 points, and CJ Hines, who added 15 points, the Hornets were outshot by the Hawkeyes 45.8% to 35.4%.
Iowa's next game is against No. 8 Creighton, while Alabama State will face Division-III Oglethorpe at home.
