Israel 'Nakba' Event Canceled by Speaker McCarthy As He Launches Opposing Celebration of US-Israel Ties

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy canceled Rep. Rashida Tlaib's event at the Capitol Building with anti-Israel groups that decries the founding of the Jewish State as a "catastrophe."
Tlaib sought to reserve space to mark the "Nakba," a Palestinian term for the 1948 founding of Israel that translates to "catastrophe."
McCarthy decried her plans as "antisemitic" and used his seniority to reserve the event space for himself.
The event was meant to bring awareness about the Nakba and create space for Palestinian Americans who experienced the Nakba firsthand to tell their stories of trauma and survival.
McCarthy will instead lead a bipartisan briefing celebrating the 75th anniversary of the US-Israel relationship instead.
