Overview

• The Israeli forces have widened their assault on Gaza, disregarding international calls for a ceasefire led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Despite a mounting civilian death toll exceeding 8,300 and a serious humanitarian crisis, the Israeli ground operations continue to escalate.
• The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) have expanded their ground operations inside Gaza, attacking Hamas gunmen in underground tunnels, a key strategic objective for Israel. Hamas responded with anti-tank missiles and machine-gun fire.
• Israeli forces have freed a soldier from Hamas captivity, but many of the remaining hostages are believed to be held in the Hamas tunnel network. There are ongoing international talks involving the US, Israel, Qatar, Egypt, and Hamas regarding the release of the hostages.
• The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is worsening. Over 1.4 million of Gaza’s civilian population have been made homeless. The United Nations is pushing for a pause in the fighting to allow more humanitarian aid to reach the area.
• In the West Bank, which many analysts feared would be the spark for increased Israeli and Palestinian violence, settler attacks on Palestinian communities have increased in the shadow of the war in Gaza. At least seven Palestinians have been killed by Israeli settlers since the war in Gaza began.
