J. Harrison Ghee and Alex Newell are the first nonbinary-identifying actors to be nominated for Tony Awards.
Newell is nominated for supporting actor in a musical for “Shucked”.
Ghee is nominated for lead actor in a musical for “Some Like It Hot”.
The Tonys’ acting categories are gendered, so nonbinary and gender-nonconforming actors must choose the category in which they want to be considered.
The 76th Tony Awards will take place on June 11 at the United Palace in New York City.
