JK Rowling Would Serve Two Years Over Trans Views

Author rejects changing language

  • JK Rowling has publicly stated she would rather go to prison for up to two years than refer to transgender women as “women”. This came in response to reports that the UK's Labour Party is considering making transphobic offences punishable by imprisonment.
  • She rejected the slogan “repeat after us: trans women are women” being projected onto the Ministry of Justice building, responding with a simple 'No'.
  • Rowling's comments follow her previous critiques of Labour party members over their stance on transgender issues, criticising them for their support of trans rights, despite having previously suggested they would send a transgender woman rapist to a female prison.
  • Rowling's views on gender have been a source of controversy since 2019, and have led to backlash from fans and some of the Harry Potter franchise cast members, who have publicly contradicted her views.
  • In addition to refusing to use preferred pronouns, Rowling has previously expressed opposition to policies permitting people to use facilities corresponding to their gender identities, such as bathrooms and changing rooms.
