Lithos Carbon Secures $57.1 Million Investment for Carbon Capture Initiative
The startup plans to use crushed basalt to capture 154,000 tons of CO2 by 2028, equivalent to the emissions of about 34,000 cars each year.
- Lithos Carbon, a startup that uses crushed basalt to capture carbon, has received a $57.1 million investment from Frontier, a benefit corporation backed by companies including Meta, Alphabet, and Stripe.
- The funds will be used to capture 154,000 tons of CO2 by 2028 by spreading basalt dust on thousands of acres of US farmland, equivalent to the emissions of about 34,000 cars each year.
- Basalt dust captures carbon naturally, and Lithos Carbon is working to scale up this process, which is known as enhanced weathering.
- Lithos Carbon, founded in 2022, is currently working with over 80 farms across nine states in the US.
- The startup faces challenges in accurately measuring the amount of carbon captured and ensuring the process does not disturb local ecosystems or affect air quality.
