London Tube Strikes Suspended Amid Pay Dispute Talks

Mayor Sadiq Khan's revised pay offer and the generous pensions of Tube drivers come under scrutiny as negotiations continue.

  • London Underground strikes have been suspended following progress in talks over a pay dispute, with a revised pay offer put forward by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.
  • Tube drivers have a rare type of pension that allows them to retire on an income worth almost three-quarters of their salary, on top of salaries close to two times more than the national average.
  • Transport for London workers have defined benefit pensions, which are expensive for employers to maintain and have largely disappeared from the private sector.
  • An independent review into TfL’s pension scheme in 2022 found that moving from the 'final salary' model to the less generous 'career average' system could save as much as £154m a year.
  • Mayor Sadiq Khan has faced calls to enforce the new Strikes (Minimum Service Levels) Act, which would give him the power to intervene in the strike action and ensure minimum service levels on London Underground.
