Long Island Man Escapes Custody, Steals Patrol Car After DUI Arrest

The suspect was apprehended in a cemetery and faces multiple charges including grand larceny and driving while intoxicated.

  • John Gibson, 37, was arrested for suspected DUI by state troopers at around 5:30 a.m. Friday.
  • While handcuffed in the back of a patrol car, Gibson slipped his cuffs to the front and drove off in the vehicle.
  • The stolen patrol car was found approximately 3 miles away near a cemetery in West Babylon.
  • Gibson was apprehended in the cemetery and charged with grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, and other offenses.
  • He pleaded not guilty to all charges during his arraignment in Suffolk’s 1st District Court.
