Major Airlines Restrict Power Bank Use and Charging on Flights

Singapore Airlines, Scoot, and Thai Airways implement new safety measures prohibiting power bank use, while Cathay Pacific maintains its current policy.

  • Singapore Airlines and Scoot will ban passengers from using or charging power banks during flights starting in April 2025.
  • Thai Airways will enforce a similar ban beginning March 15, 2025, citing passenger and crew safety as the primary concern.
  • Passengers on these airlines can still carry power banks up to 100Wh without approval, while those between 100Wh and 160Wh require prior authorization; power banks over 160Wh are not permitted.
  • Cathay Pacific has opted not to follow this trend, allowing power banks to charge devices but prohibiting their recharging via onboard USB ports.
  • The new restrictions align with International Air Transport Association (IATA) guidelines and follow past incidents of power bank overheating, including a fire on a Scoot flight in 2023.
