Major Corporations Struggle to Meet Water Sustainability Targets, Reveals Nonprofit Ceres Report

Top Companies like Coca-Cola, Amazon, and General Mills Fall Short in Progress toward 2030 Water Sustainability Goals, Highlighting the Urgent Need for Improved Efforts Amid Climate Change Impacts.

  • Major corporations in industries such as clothing, food, beverage, and technology are striving to achieve water sustainability targets by 2030 due to increasing threats to their supply chains from climate change impacts like droughts and floods.
  • Ceres, a sustainability nonprofit, evaluated 72 companies based on factors including commitments to protect the quantity and quality of the water they use, as well as their impact on water ecosystems, and few of them are close to meeting their goals.
  • Coca-Cola, one of the assessed companies, aims to achieve 100% circular water use by 2030 but didn't specify its progress towards this goal or its likelihood of achieving it. Their main water footprint is in agriculture, rather than product manufacturing.
  • Tech giants Amazon and Apple, which require vast amounts of water to cool their extensive datacenters, reported less than 20% progress towards their water sustainability goals.
  • General Mills showed the most progress among the evaluated companies, achieving 65% of its water-related targets for 2030. The company cited challenges like extreme weather conditions affecting their ingredient sourcing, with 85% of its water use being in agriculture.
