Mass Squirrel Deaths at Tokyo Zoo Suspected to be Drug-Induced Poisoning

Inokashira Park Zoo investigates after 31 squirrels die following treatment with anti-parasitic medicine and insecticide, while the surviving squirrels are back on display.

31 out of 40 squirrels at the Inokashira Park Zoo in Tokyo died following treatment with anti-parasitic medicine and insecticide spraying over their nest boxes.
The treatments were administered on December 4 as part of a sanitary precaution.
The zoo has admitted that drug-induced poisoning cannot be ruled out as the cause of the deaths.
A pathological examination of the deceased squirrels is currently underway.
The surviving squirrels are back on display after the facility was cleaned and vetted for safety.
