Mastermind of massive German tax fraud scheme sentenced to over 8 years in prison

  • Hanno Berger, a former tax inspector turned legal tax expert, was sentenced to eight years and three months in jail for causing tax damage of around 113 million euros.
  • Berger orchestrated a dividend stripping scheme known as "cum-ex" that cost German taxpayers an estimated 10 billion euros.
  • Berger had already been sentenced to eight years in prison in a separate trial for causing 278 million euros in tax losses.
  • The cum-ex scandal sparked outrage in Germany as ordinary citizens face economic hardship.
  • Berger fled to Switzerland in 2012 but was extradited to Germany earlier this year to face charges.
