Overview

  • The Delhi Pollution Control Committee's May 1 assessment found the Yamuna River fails to meet basic water quality standards at most monitoring points in Delhi.
  • Severe organic and bacterial contamination was identified, with biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) levels peaking at 64 mg/L in Okhla, far exceeding the 3 mg/L Class ā€˜C’ limit.
  • Fecal coliform levels reached 92,000 MPN/100ml at ITO Bridge, 37 times the permissible limit, indicating widespread sewage discharge into the river.
  • Ammonical nitrogen concentrations rose to 5.75 mg/L at Nizamuddin Bridge, surpassing the 1 mg/L safe threshold, signaling industrial and domestic wastewater contamination.
  • Palla, the upstream entry point of the Yamuna into Delhi, was the only relatively cleaner site, with significantly lower pollution levels compared to downstream areas.
