Mikey Varas Announced as Head Coach for San Diego FC

Varas, former interim coach of the U.S. men's national team, will lead the new MLS expansion team in its inaugural season.

  • Mikey Varas, 41, was named the first head coach of MLS expansion franchise San Diego FC on Monday.
  • Varas recently served as the interim head coach for the U.S. men's national team and led the U.S. U-20 squad to the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup quarterfinals.
  • He also guided the U.S. U-20 team to the 2022 CONCACAF Championship, securing the nation's first men's Olympic berth since 2008.
  • San Diego FC will play its home games at San Diego State's football stadium and will debut as the 30th MLS team in 2025.
  • The team currently has six players under contract, including notable Mexican winger Chucky Lozano.
