McDonnell's friends identified a distinctive birthmark and red Adidas swim trunks on a torso found on a Queens beach as belonging to him.
The headless, armless body has not been officially identified, and the cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.
McDonnell was last seen leaving his Brooklyn house on the evening of Nov. 4, and his bicycle was found locked up at the beach on Nov. 7.
Police believe McDonnell's body became dismembered in the churning ocean.
