Missouri Governor Prohibits Land Purchases Near Military Bases by Foreign Adversaries

The executive order comes amid national security concerns over land purchases by Chinese companies, with similar measures enacted in other states.

  • Missouri Governor Mike Parson has issued an executive order prohibiting the purchase of agricultural land near military facilities in Missouri by foreign entities from countries designated as American adversaries, including China, Russia, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and Venezuela.
  • The order comes amid heightened national security concerns over the purchase of land near military bases across the U.S. by Chinese companies.
  • About 42,596 acres of farmland in Missouri is currently owned by Chinese entities.
  • The order does not impact existing land owners and any future foreign purchase of land will require approval from the Missouri Department of Agriculture.
  • Other states, like Arkansas and Florida, have enacted similar measures as concerns over China remain high.
