Missouri Prison Guards Charged in Death of Inmate

Four guards face murder charges, and a fifth is charged with manslaughter following the death of Othel Moore Jr. in custody.

Othel Moore Jr. died in December 2023 after being restrained and pepper-sprayed by guards at Jefferson City Correctional Center.
The medical examiner ruled Moore's death a homicide caused by positional asphyxiation.
The Missouri Department of Corrections has since discontinued the restraint system used on Moore.
Ten employees involved in the incident, including the warden, are no longer with the department.
A federal lawsuit has been filed by Moore's family, alleging a pattern of abuse within the Missouri Department of Corrections.
