NASA Completes First Round of Testing for Artemis Moon Rovers

The Lunar Terrain Vehicles from three commercial providers are being evaluated to support future lunar missions and exploration.

  • NASA has finished the initial testing phase for three Lunar Terrain Vehicles (LTVs) developed by Intuitive Machines, Lunar Outpost, and Venturi Astrolab.
  • The tests were conducted at NASA's Johnson Space Center using the Active Response Gravity Offload System (ARGOS) to simulate the Moon's reduced gravity.
  • Astronauts and engineers performed tasks like tool storage, cargo handling, and emergency drills while wearing prototype spacesuits from NASA and Axiom Space.
  • Feedback from these human-in-the-loop tests will be used by the companies to refine their rover designs ahead of a planned preliminary design review in 2025.
  • The LTVs are slated to support Artemis V and future missions, enabling astronauts to explore the Moon's south pole and laying groundwork for eventual Mars exploration.
