NBA, Diamond Sports Strike Deal to Continue Local Broadcasts for 15 Teams Through 2023-24 Season

Deal contingent on bankruptcy court approval amidst Diamond Sports' financial struggles; gives NBA and teams option to renew agreements in markets where Diamond continues operations after expiry of shortened agreements.

  • The NBA and Diamond Sports Group have agreed on a deal that will allow local broadcasts to continue for 15 NBA teams through the remainder of the 2023-24 season. This agreement is subject to court approval as Diamond Sports Group is currently in bankruptcy court.
  • The arrangement provides certainty for the NBA and its teams in the current season about their game broadcasts. Teams affected include Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets, Cleveland Cavaliers, Dallas Mavericks, Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, LA Clippers, Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Memphis Grizzlies, New Orleans Pelicans, Oklahoma City Thunder, Orlando Magic and San Antonio Spurs.
  • Existing agreements between NBA teams and Bally Sports RSNs will expire at the end of this season. However, if Diamond continues operations, teams have the option to extend their agreements for one more year.
  • As a part of the agreement, Diamond Sports can license games to an over-the-air station in a team's home market. This follows a trend of NBA teams opting to have more games shown on broadcast television.
  • The agreement does not affect the NBA's negotiations for a new national television deal for broadcast rights due to expire at the end of the 2024-25 season. The new deal is expected to increase revenue for the NBA, although teams will have to navigate through this season and the next before seeing those increases.
