New Song "Now and Then" Released by the Beatles Using AI Technology and Pre-Existing Recordings

Unreleased John Lennon track from 1977 completed with the help of AI enhancements and contributions from surviving Beatles bandmates, termed the "last" Beatles song in band's musical canon.

  • The Beatles have posthumously released a new song titled 'Now and Then' with the help of AI technology, using a previously unreleased John Lennon track from 1977, contributions from surviving members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, and advanced audio learning algorithms.
  • Lennon's demo was originally considered for inclusion in the Beatles Anthology project in 1995 but was rejected due to the poor quality of the original recording. However, McCartney persisted with the idea, attributing special significance to the song as Lennon's last words to him were reportedly 'Think about me every now and then, old friend.'
  • To clean up Lennon's demo, Peter Jackson's machine audio learning algorithm was used to isolate Lennon's vocal, remove background noise, and preserve the piano accompaniment, allowing the modern overlaid recordings of McCartney and Starr, Harrison’s 1995 guitar work, and additional orchestration to enhance the track.
  • The release of 'Now and Then' follows a three-part rollout consisting of a short film about the making of the track, the song itself, and finally Jackson’s music video. It's also used as a marketing strategy, being sold as a double-A-side single with a remixed version of the Beatles' first single, 'Love Me Do', and appearing on newly expanded releases of the band’s greatest-hits compilations.
  • There are mixed reviews about the new release, with some critics seeing the AI-enhanced track as morbid, presumptuous, or creatively questionable due to the missing approvals and participations from the original Beatles. However, others regard it as a fascinating artifact and a sentimental tribute to the band’s legacy.
