New York City Traffic Congestion Pricing Plan Gets Federal Approval, Raising Additional $1 Billion Annually for MTA Repairs

  • The Federal Highway Administration approved the release of the environmental assessment for public comment, clearing the way for implementation of tolls in parts of Manhattan.
  • Drivers could face charges of up to $23 a day starting in late 2023 under the plan which aims to reduce traffic and fund mass transit improvements.
  • The assessment found the charges would decrease traffic, improve air quality, increase transit ridership, and generate $1 to $1.5 billion per year for the MTA.
  • The program would issue bonds against the revenue to raise $15 billion for repairs and improvements.
  • New Jersey's governor criticized the plan, saying it unfairly impacts New Jersey commuters who drive into the city.
