California Governor Gavin Newsom has rejected proposals to keep former President Donald Trump off the state’s primary ballot, stating that in California, candidates are defeated at the polls.
The move comes after the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that Trump is ineligible to run for the presidency under the U.S. Constitution's insurrection clause, leading to other states exploring similar options.
California Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis had earlier urged the state’s Secretary of State to explore all legal options to remove Trump from the ballot.
Newsom's statement has been seen as a pushback against these efforts, with him labeling them as a 'political distraction'.
Despite the Colorado ruling, legal experts predict that the U.S. Supreme Court will likely overturn the decision.
