Northeast India Monsoon Rains Push Flood Death Toll to 34

Continued heavy rainfall is overwhelming rivers and straining rescue teams as authorities brace for further downpours.

Overview

  • Thirty-four people have died in floods and landslides across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Manipur and Sikkim since late May.
  • In Assam, 3.6 lakh residents in 764 villages across 19 districts are affected as the Brahmaputra and tributaries flow above danger marks.
  • Indian Air Force helicopters and Assam Rifles teams have airlifted hundreds of stranded villagers, rescued 14 people from the Bomjir river and faced delays evacuating over 1,200 tourists in north Sikkim.
