NYC Mayor Announces Plan to Eliminate $2 Billion in Medical Debt
The city will partner with RIP Medical Debt to provide relief for up to 500,000 residents over a three-year period.
- New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced a plan to eliminate $2 billion in medical debt for up to 500,000 residents over a three-year period.
- The city will partner with the charity RIP Medical Debt to purchase debt portfolios of eligible New Yorkers from hospitals and debt collectors.
- Eligibility for the debt relief is based on two criteria: having an annual household income at or below 400% of the federal poverty line, or having medical debt equal to 5% or more of their annual household income.
- There is no application process for the program, and those who are granted the forgiveness will be notified.
- The one-time debt relief program will launch later this year and is expected to run for three years.
