Ohio Bill Restricting Trans Youth Healthcare and Sports Participation Awaits Governor's Decision

Gov. Mike DeWine has 10 business days to sign or veto the controversial bill, which has faced significant opposition from medical professionals and civil rights advocates.

  • An Ohio bill, HB 68, that would prohibit doctors from providing gender-affirming care to trans youth and block transgender female student athletes from participating in girls’ sports, has been approved by the state legislature and is now headed to the desk of Gov. Mike DeWine.
  • The bill was amended to allow trans children who had already begun puberty blockers or hormones before the law’s enactment to continue on those medications. Other minors will not have access to those treatments.
  • Gov. DeWine, who has a mixed record on LGBTQ+ rights, has 10 business days to sign or veto the bill. In 2021, he indicated that he will not support legislation that blocks trans women and girls from participating in female sports.
  • Medical professionals and civil rights advocates across Ohio have spoken out overwhelmingly against HB 68, arguing that it will harm the mental health of trans children in the state.
  • If the bill is signed into law, Ohio will join a growing list of states that have severely restricted the resources offered to transgender children.
