Old National Bank Shooting Survivors Sue Gun Store for Negligence

Lawsuit Alleges River City Firearms Overlooked 'Red Flags' in Sale of Weapon Used in Deadly Attack

  • Survivors of the Old National Bank mass shooting in Louisville, Kentucky, and the families of two victims have filed a lawsuit against River City Firearms, the gun store that sold the weapon used in the attack.
  • The lawsuit alleges that the store failed to recognize 'red flags' when selling an AR-15-style rifle to the shooter, Connor Sturgeon, who had demonstrated a lack of knowledge about firearms and behaved suspiciously during the purchase.
  • Sturgeon used the weapon to kill five people and injure several others during a meeting at the bank on April 10, 2023.
  • The lawsuit also accuses the store of irresponsibly selling Sturgeon additional accessories that made him more deadly, including three extra 30-round magazines, a red-dot sight for increased accuracy, and a vertical grip for better control.
  • Federal law generally protects gun sellers and manufacturers from liability if their weapons are used in crimes, but exceptions can be made if negligence on the part of the seller can be proven.
