OtterBox has announced a new line of iPhone cases, Apple Watch bands, and MagSafe wallets made from a leather alternative derived from nopal cactus leaves.
The new material, called Desserto, is marketed as a durable, cruelty-free, and sustainable alternative to traditional leather.
OtterBox's move comes after Apple's switch to a polyester-based material called FineWoven for its iPhone cases and accessories, which was criticized for its high price, tendency to scratch easily, and environmental impact.
The cactus-based material is harvested in a way that allows the cactus to continue growing, contributing to its sustainability.
The new OtterBox products made from cactus leather will be available in four colors and are expected to launch later this year.
