Parents Convicted for Starving and Burying Three-Year-Old Son in Birmingham

Tai and Naiyahmi Yasharahyalah were found guilty of neglect, cruelty, and perverting justice after their malnourished son died and was secretly buried in their garden.

Three-year-old Abiyah Yasharahyalah died in 2020 from a respiratory illness exacerbated by severe malnutrition caused by his parents' extreme vegan diet and neglect.
Parents Tai and Naiyahmi Yasharahyalah, who had established an isolated 'off-grid' lifestyle, kept their son's body in their bed for eight days before burying him in their garden.
The couple, who rejected medical care and mainstream societal systems, attempted to treat their son's illness with garlic and ginger instead of seeking professional help.
Abiyah's remains were discovered in 2022 after police investigated the couple, who had relocated to a caravan in Somerset; a post-mortem revealed signs of malnutrition, fractures, and severe dental decay.
The parents were convicted of neglect, perverting the course of justice, and causing or allowing the death of their child, with sentencing scheduled for next week.
