Paris to Implement Carpool Lane on Périphérique Starting March 3
The new lane will prioritize carpoolers, public transport, and emergency vehicles during peak hours to reduce pollution and traffic congestion.
- The carpool lane will operate on the left side of the Périphérique and parts of the A1, A12, and A13 highways during weekday peak hours: 7:00–10:30 AM and 4:00–8:00 PM.
- Eligible vehicles include those with at least two occupants, public transport, taxis, emergency vehicles, and vehicles for people with reduced mobility; violators face a €135 fine starting May 1 after a two-month educational phase.
- This initiative builds on the temporary Olympic lanes from the 2024 Games and aims to combat pollution and noise affecting 550,000 residents near the Périphérique.
- Critics, including regional leaders and business groups, argue the measure is unfair to night-shift workers and may exacerbate traffic and pollution in surrounding areas.
- The lane's activation will be dynamically managed based on real-time traffic conditions, with visible indicators signaling when it is in use.
