Pentagon to Install Solar Panels in Clean Energy Push

The initiative, part of a $104 million federal grant program, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy resilience.

  • The Pentagon is set to install solar panels as part of President Biden's clean energy initiative, with the project being one of 31 government sites receiving a total of $104 million in Energy Department grants.
  • In addition to solar panels, the Pentagon will also install a heat pump system and solar thermal panels to reduce reliance on systems that use natural gas and fuel oil combustion.
  • The solar panels will provide an uninterrupted power source at the Pentagon in case of a cyberattack or other outage to the bulk grid.
  • The projects align with Biden’s 2021 executive order that called for a 65% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from federal operations by 2030 and a net-zero building portfolio by 2045.
  • The program is expected to leverage more than $361 million in private investment and is part of the first round of $250 million of awards to improve renewable energy at federal buildings.
