PlayStation to End Integration with Social Media Platform X (Formerly Twitter) on PS4 and PS5 Next Week

Users to lose ability to view and share content, including screenshots, videos and gameplay activities, directly from PS5 and PS4 consoles to X; alternatives via PlayStation mobile app and ShareFactory highlighted.

  • Sony is ending the integration of PlayStation with X (formerly known as Twitter) across PS4 and PS5 consoles via a new update scheduled for Monday, November 13, 2023.
  • The termination will prevent users from directly uploading console-generated content like screenshots and video clips to X, as well as viewing any X-based content or linkage of an X account on PS4 and PS5 consoles.
  • Despite the inconvenience, Sony noted that users can still share their gaming content on X through alternatives such as the PlayStation mobile app for PS5 users, and ShareFactory for PS4 users.
  • It is speculated that Sony, like Microsoft, might have decided to end X integration to avoid paying the social media site's newly instituted application programming interface (API) fees.
  • Following Sony's decision, Nintendo Switch becomes the only gaming console that still supports direct media sharing to X.
  • The backlash from platform users remains mixed, with some expressing disappointment while others remain apathetic, highlighting that they were unaware of the feature. Sony has not yet provided further explanations for the change
