Poland Reports Russian Missile Intrusion into Its Airspace

NATO Member Poland Scrambles Aircraft in Response, Russia Demands Evidence for Explanation

  • Poland's armed forces chief, Gen. Wieslaw Kukula, stated that a Russian missile entered Poland's airspace for almost three minutes before returning to Ukrainian airspace. The missile traveled about 40km (25 miles) into Polish airspace early on Friday.
  • Poland, a NATO member, scrambled Polish and Allied aircraft in response to the incident. There have been no reports of an explosion.
  • Russia has not provided any explanations about the unidentified object that briefly entered Poland’s airspace until it receives evidence that shows the object was a Russian missile, according to Russia’s top diplomat in Poland.
  • Poland summoned the Russian charge d’affaires and demanded an explanation for the violation of Poland’s airspace by a missile and an immediate halt to such activities.
  • This is not the first time an unauthorized object has entered Poland’s airspace from the direction of Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion. In November 2022, two men were killed when a missile struck the village of Przewodow, a few kilometers from the border. Western officials said they believed a Ukrainian air defense missile went astray.
