Progressive Mayor Takes Reins in Chicago Amid Crime Wave and Housing Crisis

Brandon Johnson was sworn in as Chicago’s 57th mayor on Monday and faces challenges such as rising violent crime, lack of affordable housing, and an influx of migrants needing shelter.
Johnson campaigned on increased mental health and youth programs to curb crime, but also said he supports defunding the police, angering some residents and business leaders.
Under the previous mayor, Chicago saw nearly 800 homicides in 2021, the highest number in 25 years, and over 2,700 shootings according to police data.
Johnson plans to reinvest in underserved communities on the South and West Sides but needs to gain trust and address root causes of crime.
To fund new programs, Johnson proposed raising taxes on high earners and large companies, a controversial move that faces political opposition.
