Prominent Iranian Human Rights Lawyer Arrested Following Funeral of Teenage Girl Killed in Mysterious Metro Incident
Lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, vocal critic of Iran's mandatory hijab law, detained on charge of violating the same law, amid suspicions of foul play in the metro incident involving the deceased teen, Armita Geravanad.
- Human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh, a known critic of Iran's mandatory hijab law, was arrested after attending the funeral of teenager Armita Geravanad who was injured in a mysterious Tehran Metro incident.
- Reports state multiple arrests happened at the funeral and note that Geravanad was not wearing a hijab at the time she was injured, pointing towards a potential link with Iran's controversial hijab law.
- Geravanad, who remained in a coma for weeks after the incident on Tehran's Metro, had been reported hitting her head on the station’s platform, however, activists suspect she might have been pushed or attacked due to her lack of hijab.
- Despite CCTV cameras present in the metro, no footage from inside the train was released by the Iranian authorities, which has led to a call from activists for an independent investigation by the United Nations' fact-finding mission on Iran.
- The incident and subsequent death of Geravanad has brought back memories of the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini who died in the custody of Iran’s morality police for not wearing a hijab, leading to nationwide protests last year.
