Protester Sentenced to Jail for Toppling Statue During Wisconsin Protest

Kelsey D. Nelson damaged the statue of Hans Christian Heg and looted a nearby jewelry store during a protest against police brutality in Madison, Wisconsin in June 2020.
The statue of abolitionist Hans Christian Heg was pulled down and beheaded.
Nelson apologized in court and was ordered to pay restitution for the damage.
The head of the statue was stolen but later returned; the statue has been mostly restored.
Nelson was sentenced to six months in jail for his role in the damage and looting.
