Racist, Xenophobic, and Antireligious Crimes in France Increased by 11% in 2024
A government report reveals over 16,000 recorded offenses last year, with Paris showing disproportionately high rates.
- The French Ministry of the Interior reported a total of 16,335 racist, xenophobic, or antireligious infractions in 2024, including 9,350 crimes and 6,985 contraventions.
- This marks an 11% increase in such crimes compared to 2023, following a 30% rise the previous year, resulting in a 44% increase over two years.
- Most offenses involved public insults (52%), threats or blackmail (20%), and non-public insults accounted for nearly all contraventions (98%).
- Paris recorded crime rates three to four times the national average, attributed partially to its high population density and tourism.
- The report highlights that men, individuals aged 25 to 54, and African nationals were disproportionately represented among the 9,700 victims identified.
