Rapid Greenland Ice Sheet Melt Threatens Massive Sea Level Rise

  • The Arctic is losing its ability to regulate global temperatures due to melting at the interface between ice sheets and the ocean.
  • Daily tides with warmer water caused a hole taller than the Washington Monument at the bottom of a major glacier in Greenland, accelerating its retreat.
  • The phenomenon may not be limited to this glacier, raising questions about previous projections of melting rates on the world's vulnerable ice sheets.
  • If the rapid melt is happening in the rest of Greenland and the even bigger Antarctic ice sheet, then global ice loss and sea level rise could jump as much as twice as fast as previously thought.
  • The study provides strong evidence that models need to include these tidal effects deep inland and if they don't, then they are underestimating future sea level rise.
